Product Description
The Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine grows in Burke silt loam soils on a 4% slope at 1200 ft elevation. These are moderately deep, well drained soils formed in loess, underlain by cobbly alluvium. Immediately next to the Carriage House Cabernet Sauvignon, we have planted Cabernet Franc. However, the soils are different. The Franc vines grow in Finley silt loam, very deep and well drained, on an alluvial terrace. The rows committed to Carriage House are farmed for that wine, and are cropped at one cluster per shoot. The Merlot for Carriage House is sourced from two adjacent blocks containing different soils which add complexity. The uphill block, on a 5--8% slope, is shallow Scoon silt loam, formed in loess, underlain by basalt. The down slope block, on a 5% gradient, has shallow Scoon silt loam giving way to Scooteney cobbly silt loam, a very deep well drained soil on an alluvial terrace at 1150 feet elevation. The rockiness of the soil produces more tannic fruit as a blending component.
